Pain and cramping

Arnica

For pains that make you feel sore and bruised. The bed feels too hard when laying down.

Bellis perennis

Useful for quick, sharp and very intense groin pains that may radiate down the legs. This remedy is known to be very helpful with Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction.

Cimicifuga

For sharp pains that come and go and dart very quickly around your body (these pains are commonly located in the belly).

It is recommended to go low in potency with this remedy, with a 6CH or a 12CH.

Mag phos

Useful for general pain and cramping that is sharp and relieved by warmth and pressure. Some refer to this remedy as homeopathic aspirin!

Rhus toxicodendron

For pain and stiffness that is relieved by moving around. Acheyness after laying down. Helpful for ligament and sciatic problems.

cell salts

For general pain and cramps, such as leg cramps, you can alternate the cell salts Mag phos 6X and Calc phos 6X. Alternate one every 15 minutes if in a cramp/spasm. You may want to take a dose or two of each for a week or two to build stores of these minerals back up in your body.

sleep problems

Cocculus indicus

For nights when you cannot get back to sleep. May be accompanied by anxious dreams or nightmares. You cannot sleep due to anxiety.

Coffea cruda

Inability to fall asleep due to too many thoughts, sensitivity to pain, or excitement. You sleep very lightly and wake at every sound.

gelsemium

You cannot sleep due to anxiousness and fear about birth. The body may ache and feel heavy.

rhus toxicodendron

A very restless sleep, in which you toss and turn all night, unable to get comfortable. You may have vivid, work related dreams. You feel stiff and sore when you roll over or when it’s time to get out of bed.

sepia

For worn out, irritable mamas. A mom needing this remedy is probably pregnant and looking after other small children. You wake up around 3am, unable to get back to sleep. You are exhausted by the time morning comes.

swelling

Nat mur 6X cell salt

Sodium chloride (nat mur) supports the nerves and muscles and promotes water balance in the body. It is used to help with swelling and can even be taken to prevent water retention.

This could be taken 2-3 times per day.

Breech Position

If you reach 34 weeks and find out that your baby has settled in the “breech” position with it’s head up, you may consider encouraging the baby to flip around into an optimal birthing position (head down) with a remedy from below. I would encourage you to find a homeopath to work with.

Natrum Muriaticum

Nat mur is recommended for babies who are breech due to low amniotic fluid. The mother will have other symptoms of dryness, such as dry lips.

Pulsatilla

Pulsatilla is a highly effective homeopathic remedy for turning a breech baby.

A common recommendation is to take one dose of 30CH every 2 hours up to six times and then STOP. Do not take any more. OR to take 200CH twice daily.

Viscum album

Viscum is recommended to try after you have tried Pulsatilla, if it did not work. Give a buffer of at least a few days between the two remedies (if you are not close to birthing).

I would also recommend looking into Spinning Babies, The Miles Circuit, and Chiropractic care.

posterior position

If you find yourself at the end of pregnancy with a baby in the posterior (sunny side up) position, first try the following:

  • avoid crossing your legs and sitting for long periods, especially in a reclined position
  • when sitting, sit “on your sitz bones”, leaning slightly forward
  • forward stretch and sit in child’s pose as much as possible

If babe is still posterior, the homeopathic remedy Kali carb can encourage baby to turn. This can also be given in labour.

Labour Prep

Some homeopaths and midwives advise to take certain remedies late in pregnancy (starting around week 36 or 37, no earlier) to help support a normal childbirth. We do need to be cautious of this, as when remedies are taken routinely without a need, they can cause the symptoms that they are known to help. This is called a proving symptom. Proving symptoms are quite rare, but not impossible. Take Caulophyllum as an example: it can pave the way for a trouble-free childbirth IF it is indicated, but if it’s taken routinely, it can cause a difficult labour.

My recommendation is to have certain homeopathic remedies on hand for labour should you need them, and not to take them to “prep” your body. The only exception is that there are some remedies indicated to take if you have a history of a hard or difficult labour.

I will list common remedies and protocols below. It is up to you to decide if you would like to take them in preparation or not, keeping in mind my warnings above. Do not mix and match or follow more than one protocol – stick to the outline.

  1. A combination remedy of: Arnica 5CH, Caulophyllum 5CH, Cimicifuga 5CH, Gelsemium 5CH and Pulsatilla 5CH, taken once a day for the last 4 weeks of pregnancy. A pre-made combination of these remedies can usually be found at a location that sells homeopathic remedies.
  2. A protocol of Arnica 12CH, Caulophyllum 12CH and Cimicifuga 12CH, each taken once a week for 4 weeks (starting at the 36th week). Leave at least 1 or 2 days in between each remedy: ex, Arnica on Mondays, Caul. on Wednesdays, Cimic. on Fridays.
  3. A protocol of Caulophyllum 30CH and Cimicifuga 30CH, alternating daily for 2 weeks starting on week 38 (so 7 doses total of each would be taken).

FALSE LABOUR

False labour pains can be intense, but do not dilate the cervix. The following remedies can help to calm your contractions if your baby and body are not yet ready, or help create strong, effective contractions if it’s go time!

Belladonna

False labour pains that are sudden, violent and spasmodic. Pains typically leave as sudden as they began. You may want to bring your legs towards your belly, and be very sensitive to touch.

Caulophyllum

False labour pains that come in the last week of pregnancy. Pains may be felt in the lower belly. You may be sensitive to cold and want to be warmed up. Emotionally, you may feel apprehensive of the birth, sleepless and restless.

This is the most specific homeopathic remedy for false labour pains.*

Cimicifuga

False labour that may have started with severe, spasmodic pains in the uterus. The labour pains will start and then completely stop.

Pulsatilla

False labour pains in a woman that will be acting very helpless and emotional, needing comfort and reassurance. You may want the window open or to be fanned and to feel relief by moving around.

overdue

If you’ve had a healthy pregnancy and are not at risk of being induced – hang tight! Due dates are a guess. Every woman and every baby are different. Your baby may need a little longer inside and try to make peace with that. Trust your body and trust your baby.

Look to your emotions. Are fear or anxiety holding your labour back? Work through your feelings and labour may begin.

If you are at risk of a medical induction, try homeopathy first! Homeopathy can help to relax the mind and encourage a body that is stuck. Below are some options to consider:

ARGENTUM NITRICUM 30CH

Arg nit is helpful for anticipatory anxiety. You lack confidence and doubt your abilities in labour and/or motherhood. You feel better around other people and fidget and pace around in an effort to calm your mind.

Caulophyllum 30CH

This remedy is indicated if you are late for no obvious reason, and you have no emotions holding you back.

It is recommended to take 2-3 pellets every 2 hours (take up to 6 times, so a total course of 12 hours). 2 or 3 days later if labour has not yet started, try again.

OR: Caulophyllum 12CH x Cimicifuga 12CH, alternating between the 2 remedies hourly for 12 hours.

Gelsemium 30CH

A woman who needs this remedy will be fearful of labour with very anxious anticipation, which may make you feel weak. You may dread the due date and even tremble in nervousness. You want to be alone and in a quiet place.

Lycopodium 30CH

Nervousness leading up to the due date. You may lack confidence in your ability to birth or be a mother, so you are doing everything possible to prepare. You are dreading being exposed during labour and delivery. Emotionally, you may be irritable and dictatorial.
